What did life look like before you had a personal relationship with Jesus?
There was a lot of anger in our home, and substance abuse by my dad. Mom tried her best to keep the peace, but was very stressed out. My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2001 and made the decision to go to church now facing an uncertain eternity. I had known about Jesus after that (age 9), but severely backslid in my teen years when life got too hard. After facing bullying, losing my dad and all my grandparents, and the rest of my family leaving us altogether, I felt like I never had friends or acceptance anywhere. I suffered from deep depression, anxiety, anger problems, and heavy isolation.
The school therapist and our doctor put me on anti-depressants and anti-psychotic medications on and off from the time I was 13 until 32. Instead of helping, the grief I was experiencing turned into suicidal thoughts and actions, and it was very hard to get off of these drugs. The medications made me gain a lot of weight, gave me worse symptoms than I had originally, and made me very ill. I couldn't find any help from therapy or medical professionals, although I was sent all over for testing.
To manage these feelings and pain, I turned to alcohol and drugs, which only made things worse. In 2021, my body was failing and so was my mental health. I had developed heart, kidney, lung, stomach, and many other issues, leading to me losing three jobs, my fiancé, house, savings, and remaining will to live. Everything had crumbled around me.
When and how did you first really encounter God or hear the message of Jesus in a way that connected with you?
I first heard about God when I was 9, and I really believed and was excited about Him. But I didn't understand the depth of who Jesus was or what He's done for us until I came to the end of myself at 33 years old. I remembered Him and called out several times, and He answered me each time—with unexplainable peace, an audible voice, and a strong pulling in my heart to look for Him again.
One day, I had YouTube open, and a video about Jesus popped up that really stuck out from the rest of my usual suggested content. It was an audio recording of someone reading a letter from Pontius Pilate to Caesar. For some reason, this brought the entire Gospel to life in a sudden "WOW, THIS IS ALL REAL" way.
Was there a specific turning point or moment when you decided to follow Christ?
After calling out to God and seeing that video, I got the urge to look for and open the Bible my dad had bought me before passing away. I opened it to Jeremiah 15:19–21—the only marked passage in it, marked by my mom in 2007, saying God gave her this message for me:
"The Lord replied, 'If you return to me, I will restore you, so you can continue to serve me...'"
What was that experience like for you?
After watching the video, I saw my entire life and all the wrong I had done, so I cried and repented for days. But I felt such a strong joy wash over me, like heaven was celebrating. After reading that verse, I understood that God was real, He loves me, I am called by Him, and I needed His help desperately.
So I surrendered my life—whatever was left. If He could use someone so broken, rejected, and useless, He could have me and do whatever He wanted.
Since then, how has God shown up in your life?
After that, He helped me wean off of the medications and stop drinking and doing drugs. I have absolutely no issues with my body anymore—this is completely miraculous, and the doctors could not explain it. I lost 100 lbs and do not suffer from depression, anxiety, or anything else for the first time in my life. My faith has overgrown all the fear that ruled my mind, and I'm beginning to accomplish so much I never could before with His help.
My savings are starting to build, He directed me very specifically to a job which I've kept for over a year now, and I feel the tangible presence of God with me always.
Is there a Bible verse or promise from God that has been especially meaningful to you on this journey?
There are many, but two stand out:
Jeremiah 15:19–21 — The original calling.
Colossians 2:5–6 — "For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is."
There is a story behind the second one: After my dad passed away, I saw the number 256 everywhere (and still do). It always made me think of him, so I would ask God to tell him that I love and miss him, and to give him a hug for me. Last fall, I finally asked God to reveal the mystery behind the number if there was one. The next Sunday, watching a service on TV, I saw a quoted verse on the screen. It clicked—I had never considered it would be a verse in the Bible.
I opened my Bible to Colossians 2:5–6 (2/5–6). It hit me hard. God is amazing to speak to us so clearly in His Word, and I know my dad has been getting those hugs.
If someone who is going through a hard time right now asked you for hope, what would you want to tell them about Jesus?
Our testimonies are so powerful in these situations. When you've been through so much and God has brought you through, you're able to comfort people the way the Holy Spirit has comforted you. There's no one specific line to use for giving someone hope, but I can promise you that no matter who you are or what you're going through, God will not ignore anyone who calls out to Him in earnest.
People who knew me before have seen the dramatic change. The important thing is to give God the glory and to live your life as an example of the goodness of God—a goodness available to everyone who seeks Him.
Is there anything else you would like the church family to know?
After a very heartbreaking departure from the last church we attended, my mom and I were feeling down about not having a place to gather and worship together. We tried hosting Bible studies at our house with people who were displaced, but that didn't work well either.
I felt a pull from the Lord and heard Him say, "Go to Calvary." Obedience doesn't require understanding, so we went. I felt such joy and peace—the message was Spirit-led, the song choices were great, and there was genuine enthusiasm from the congregation. I'm just delighted you all exist! ❤️✝️
What do you think your purpose is now, after everything God's done?
Part of it is the calling in Jeremiah 15: no one has ever listened to me or paid any attention before, but if God has called me to speak for Him, then that's definitely part of it.
I'm still waiting for Him to reveal the full purpose. He's given me a variety of artistic talents and a great desire to build and grow things (spiritually, in knowledge, and in the body of Christ, but also things like gardening, cooking, and building with tools), along with an adventurous spirit. I've tried doing all these things on my own only to see them crumble, but with God, these things all fit together for His purpose in my life.

Meet Adam Martens
Adam Martens is the staff intern at Calvary Pentecostal Church. This is a small part of his story — just the chapter God has him in right now.
It is the story of a man who had a good life and still felt far from God, who asked what it would look like if God were his only boss, and who found that God was already chasing him. It is about learning to fear the Lord, opening the Bible again, and saying yes to ministry training here in Kenora.
In January of 2025, my wife and I took a hard look at how we were living. We had a house on a beautiful property in Kakabeka Falls and two good incomes, but we were living larger than we needed. Both of us worked shift work, so we were almost never in church on Sunday morning. We felt distant from Christian community, and that ache just kept growing.
Before I worked at Rogers as a technician, I was a chef for many years. In both careers I always pushed myself to be the very best at whatever I was doing. But some of my favourite days at Rogers were the rare times a customer opened the door for me to talk about Jesus. I had to be careful. It was against company policy. Whenever I could steer the conversation toward Him, my heart came alive. I would walk back to my truck thinking, “This is what I was made for.”
The question kept coming to mind: What if God was my only boss? What if I worked just as hard to please Him as I ever did for any manager? That thought got me excited.
My wife and I started praying and dreaming together. We felt the Lord leading us to simplify our lives, sell the house, free up time and money, and go wherever He could use us most. I was not thinking of Kenora at the time.
Pretty soon we had the idea of starting a soup kitchen right here in Kenora, taking hot meals straight to people on the streets so we could show God’s love and get a foot in the door to talk about Jesus. That idea was born out of years in the kitchen. I knew how to feed people well. I wrote a full proposal — ten to fifteen pages — and brought it to Pastor Mike to see if we could use the church kitchen and mailing address. I spent a good amount of time writing and editing it. I even said to my wife, “There is no way God made me do all this work for nothing.” Pastor Mike and the board prayerfully looked at it. In the end we were told the kitchen is only a warming kitchen, not set up for full cooking.
I felt oddly at peace. I knew God was going to do something regardless. That proposal also showed me something I never knew about myself. I am pretty good at writing. It is not something I had ever really practiced. I was never a great student in high school, but that was because I did not care. God showed me a gift I did not even realize I had.
I did not always feel this way. I grew up in a Christian family and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour when I was a kid. I attended church every Sunday, kids club, Bible studies, youth group, youth conventions. You name it, I was there. But as an adult I started working almost every Sunday and drifted further and further away. I fed myself excuses until my faith withered like an unwatered plant. I became severely depressed. Some days the only reason I got out of bed was to bring home a paycheck. Every time I sinned, the shame crushed me so hard I rarely prayed anymore, and when I did it was mostly when I needed or wanted something. My heart had slowly hardened.
Then one night I was scrolling on Facebook and a random high-schooler I did not even know posted a video. They said, “I never post stuff like this, but the Lord told me to,” and started reading Proverbs 1:23-33. The second they started to speak, I could no longer see their face and their voice had authority. It was God Himself lecturing me.
My whole body started shaking. It was not fear like I was terrified of God. It was a reverent fear of how powerful He is, of the love He has for me, and of the consequences of sin. It all just made sense in that moment. I truly feared God, and the moment you begin to fear God is the moment you begin to grow in wisdom.
When the video ended I opened my Bible and read the whole book of Proverbs that night. From that day on I started reading my Bible faithfully again and praying with gratitude, wanting nothing more than to know Jesus. I have not wavered since. For years I had been asking God to give me wisdom and to break my heart for what breaks His. He did. He has been tearing down every wall I built up. The depression is now completely gone. I can only thank Jesus for that.
A couple of things I have learned recently about God: He chases after you. If you do not know Him, He is going to chase after you, because He loves you that much. And we often ignore God’s voice more than we realize. For years I had my fingers in my ears saying, “God, why won’t You speak to me?” when I was not reading my Bible.
Philippians 4:6
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.
